Select-to-copy means the text is copied as soon as you finish selecting it. You still choose the words with your mouse or trackpad. The difference is that you do not need to follow every selection with a keyboard shortcut or a right-click menu.
It is most useful when you are moving short pieces of information between apps: an address into a calendar invite, an error message into a support ticket, a quote into a draft, or a command into a terminal. In each case, the selection is already a deliberate action. Making it the copy action removes a pause without asking you to learn a new gesture.
What changes—and what does not
Select-to-copy does not replace paste. After selecting, you paste in the destination exactly as you normally would. It also does not try to guess what you want; it copies only after you make a text selection.

That is deliberately modest. The goal is not to make your desktop feel automated; it is to make a familiar action feel immediate.
Where it pays off
The benefit compounds in work that involves reading and responding. Researchers often pull names, dates, and quotations from sources. Developers move identifiers and error messages between a browser, editor, and terminal. Writers collect references while drafting. Support teams copy account details and reproduction steps. None of these tasks need a new system—just fewer repeated keystrokes.
It can also be useful when one hand is on a trackpad or mouse and the other is occupied. A completed selection is enough to prepare the clipboard.
Keep the workflow predictable
The best copy helper is boring in a good way: it should be fast, easy to turn off, and private about the text it handles.
